BEHIND THE SCENES

The Making Of...

Swipe Right

I wrote, directed, edited, and produced this short comedy that’s now earned over a dozen nominations and awards. The concept for the film came about in response to the immense popularity of online dating, raising a single question: “what would happen if you tried to date several people in the same place, at the same time?” With both myself, and my co-producer, Blake, having gone through a plethora of online dates, the story was born from the highlights of our shared experiences. From scheduling multiple dates back-to-back, to completely forgetting about an already scheduled date, Swipe Right is based on true events.

Subsequently, each character was written with etymological meaning and purpose. The protagonist Andrew (“manly-man”), strongly believes he embodies this masculine persona. Diana (“the goddess of the hunt”) remains elusive until the very end, while the three central women of the film are based on the elements of the psyche: the superego (Arylin: "an eye for perfection"), the ego (Becca: "to tie between"), and the id (Cassy: "the princess who seduced Apollo").

After putting the script together, I hired the needed crew and supervised casting decisions alongside the casting director. On the day of the shoot, after having spent several days rehearsing and blocking, I worked with the cinematographer and art department to set the scene accordingly.

I decided to shoot the film in one-take, something not done in an industry ripe with angles and cuts, because I wanted the audience to live, in real-time, with our protagonist to heighten the anxiety of his situation.

Once in post, I dove into Adobe’s After Effects to create the on-screen VFX, rotoscope out the unnecessary elements, and deliver the final color grading. After post processing, I developed and scheduled relevant Instagram and Facebook posts to generate a quantifiable social presence prior to the film’s release. In addition, I created specific, targeted ads to build up the audience and generate the highest engagement.
